Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between Medicare and Medicaid?

Medicare is a federal health insurance program primarily for people 65 and older (and some people with disabilities), administered by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS). Medicaid is a joint federal-state program for people with low income. They can work together — "dual-eligible" beneficiaries qualify for both. The 1-800-MEDICARE line handles Medicare questions; for Medicaid, contact your state's Medicaid office.

When can I change my Medicare plan?

The Annual Enrollment Period (AEP) runs October 15 – December 7 each year. Changes made during AEP take effect January 1. Outside of AEP, you can make changes during Special Enrollment Periods triggered by qualifying life events. If you're unsure whether you qualify for a Special Enrollment Period, calling Medicare directly is the fastest way to get a definitive answer.
